I am a Senior Mechanical Engineer with Aurecon for almost 3 years. I did not think this was where I would end up when I left school and decided to study Mechatronics Engineering.

The passion for building and creating something to help others has been with me since I was young and has taken me on an amazing journey from studying at Sydney University to working for a year before heading back to Sydney University for a PhD.

After my PhD, I worked at a design and construct company at all the various stages of design and construct projects. Since then, I have worked with numerous design consultancies as well as key suppliers of bulk materials handling equipment, enjoying learning and being challenged all the way.

As an average student in Year 10 I hated Maths, Economics, Physics etc (anything with numbers) but coped well with other Science subjects like Biology and Chemistry.

My dad was an agricultural scientist and I visited his University. I liked the campus and decided to take the entrance exam for Agriculture Science. To my surprise, I got in with a scholarship. Rest is history and I enjoyed every bit of my education and training with soils.

I believe that soil is a finite source and should be taken care for future generations. There are various soils in nature and we need understanding of its chemical and physical properties for proper management.

Throughout school I always loved maths and science while having a want to make the world a better place. It came to choosing my university course and I felt medicine made the most sense. My grandfather and mum always told me that I would love Engineering, but I could never really understand it or see myself in the field. After consideration I realised Medicine may not be the right career for me, I changed my course to Engineering and Biomedical Science. I instantly loved engineering and knew it was the right choice for me.

I always stood out in my course and was so different to my peers, but it worked in my favour as I was unique and shared an individual perspective. Throughout my course I did a semester abroad in the US and had both career related and non-career related jobs. I found a passion for the environment and decided that was going to be my way of having a career that has a positive impact on the world.

I studied Electrical Engineering overseas and then I got married. Soon after graduation I came to Australia.

My husband and I started our family and I decided to be a stay at home mum until kids were in school. Now I am a mother to 2 boys and now that they are in school I began working as Electrical Engineer in an engineering consultacy environment.

I work full time on Defence projects. Think of it as literally “lighting up their world” or giving them “power” to do what they do. My work has taken me around various Defence bases in Western Australia and I have seen various cool and rather funny things too at the bases.

Even though most of my senior school subjects were in the STEM field, engineering wasn’t on my radar until I saw a documentary about the extension of a subway line in America. I honestly don’t remember the details of the documentary but what stuck with me was how engineering could change the lives of a community – opening possibilities just by moving people from point A to point B!

I would like to think that I did well at university, however I graduated several years after some of my peers due to needing to repeat some classes. Even though I pursued a dual degree of civil engineering and marketing, I graduated with no graduate role and spent six months in retail management before using the skills from my studies in the corporate world of IT and engineering.

Now, I’m a civil engineer who is helping our clients develop communities and public spaces across Australia.
