When it was time to leave high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do next. All I knew was that I wanted to give Uni a go and that my interests, compared to my other friends, were different… So, I decided to study Electrical Engineering. I had no idea that the path I choose would give me all these amazing opportunities and experiences in various fields, roles, and parts of the world.

Ten years ago, I moved from Sweden to Australia and now call the Gold Coast home. It was a scary decision since I moved without having a job to come to, but it didn’t take me long to find one and I have been with Energy Queensland in different positions ever since.

My current role as a Project Manager at Yurika is completely different from where I started many, many moons ago as a graduate engineer within Ericsson.

UNIQ You is a fantastic opportunity for me to give back and show that choosing a path into a STEM career will give you so much more than the university program you chose. Your degree is only the foundation and the start of your own journey.

I was always surrounded by computers and those interested in computing whilst at school and at home. Although I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do when I finished year 12, I knew I loved working with computers and knew that I was great at speaking to people from all walks of life. I also loved being part of a community.

My very first job as an 18-year-old was working for an electricity company in Canberra. It’s amazing to me, that after about 23 years working at different companies in WA, NSW and Queensland, I am now working in the largest government owned electricity company in Australia and loving it.

I do not have a university degree but have been committed to learning as much as I can throughout all of my roles. Knowing how to communicate effectively has been the key to getting me where I am. I am very grateful!

My senior school subjects were English, Maths C, Maths B, Physics, Chemistry and Home Economics. I was struggling to choose what I was going to do after high school because there were just too many options!

Then someone from Central Queensland University came to talk to my cohort about the engineering program they offered. I really liked the sound of a challenging, technical profession with so many different industries/areas available to work in.

21 months of industry placements during my 4.5 years of study helped me decide the electricity industry was where I wanted to be. Upon graduating, I joined the Ergon Energy graduate program and completed rotations in Rockhampton and Townsville for 3 years.

After the graduate program I started my current role at Yurika as a Product Engineer in the Energy and Infrastructure team.

I am an Electrical Engineer with 15 years’ experience in the Electricity Industry. I also previously lectured in the Engineering department of CQUniversity for 6 years.

I currently work in Rockhampton for Energy Queensland as the Engineering Manager for Earthing. In this role, I oversee a team of engineers who set the standards for earthing on our electricity network.

I am a wife, and mother of a 2 daughters. I currently balance working and being a mum through part-time work arrangements.

I have a passion for mentoring and developing young engineers, particularly women. I am excited to be able to expand this work to high-school students via the UNIQ You program.
