Environmental Policy Officer – Maritime Emergency Management

The role of an Environmental Policy Officer has two key focuses – providing technical advice and interpretation of marine pollution policy and legislation, and working in the prevention, preparedness and response to marine pollution incidents. A good working relationship with other Queensland, Australian and inter-state government agencies is important for the role.

The Transport Operations Marine Pollution Act 1995 regulates ship-sourced pollution in Queensland, with rules covering pollutants such as oil, chemical, sewage and waste which may be on board a ship or boat. Many of these rules come from international laws, and some apply from a small tinny all the way up to an international cruise ship or bulk carrier.

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is the response agency for maritime environmental emergencies under the Queensland Coastal Contingency Action Plan, and a response partner under the National Plan for Maritime Environmental Emergencies. Whilst thankfully major ship groundings and oil spills are uncommon, training and practicing is very important to be ready to respond.

I have always loved nature and wildlife and studied environmental management with the thought of becoming a park ranger. During uni I volunteered with national parks, but my graduate position was as an Environmental Officer in compliance (pollution and land clearing) with local government.

I found I really enjoyed interpreting legislation and compliance and took a leap moving to Cairns for a role in environmental licencing and compliance. I volunteered with the State Emergency Service for several years and developed an interest in emergency management.

In 2009, I attended the Moreton Island oil spill response, and then undertook some oil spill training. Learning how marine pollution is dealt with on a national and international scale, I thought ‘wow, what a cool job.’

Ten years later, I am now in my dream job as an Environmental Policy Officer for the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in Queensland, working with a mix of legislation and marine pollution response.

Environmental Marine Advisor

An environmental marine officer or advisor within the marine field is a person that predominantly gives advice to other sections of the organisation on any type of environmental management or matters.

This could be in the form of what environmental controls may be needed to use in construction jobs, give advice on design and planning of delivery of marine infrastructure such as pontoons, boat ramps, jetties), acquiring environmental permits and approvals according to legislation, and making sure that the organisation follows best-practice environmental protocols when doing business.

This may be in the form of doing audits, reports, implementing management plans or helping out on site.

Ever since my family and I can remember, I was always chasing after anything alive that moved and was running around in nature. I had this insatiable urge to be close to animals and would watch them for hours. Not being allowed to have pets while growing up fuelled my desire even more to find a career with animals and the environment.

My selection of subjects through school was done to best align with taking natural sciences and ecology in university, and then the same for getting a job. From year 10, I commenced looking for work experience in anything I could that would align with my loves for being in nature and observing animals.

I did contract jobs for universities working on marine research stations for a few years and eventually I ended up working for the Queensland Government. My various roles have taken me all around the state, and now after 17 years, I find I still love working in the marine safety field. Doing what you love – not too shabby!

Grower Relationship Manager

The role of the Grower Relationship Manager works closely with buyers, growers and receival sites to ensure smooth and efficient delivery and out-turn of grain. This role also also works with road transport providers to schedule grain deliveries to sites.

A key part of this position is working with buyers to get pricing for growers and analysis of domestic and international commodity markets to ensure prices are competitive for growers.

The Grower Relationships Manager generates and assesses quality data of grain onsite to ensure that it meets stringent export specifications, and manages the onsite weighbridge and sampling staff.

I am the Grower Relationship Manager for Qube Agri, and work to build the services that our business can offer growers for delivery and sale of their grain.

I have always been passionate about agriculture and the bush and have worked in commodity logistics since graduating from Sydney University. My work has taken me to the UK, Switzerland and Kenya as I strive to gain more knowledge and understanding of primary production and the systems and people involved in it.

I am now settled back in the region I grew up and find great job in being a part of my community, both through work and in sport and music pursuits.
