My journey started with a simple mantra from my parents: ‘You’re either earning or learning.’ Uncertain about my future, I bypassed immediate university entry, opting for real-world experience. After graduation, I landed a full-time receptionist role at a small construction firm, but faced a setback when I lost the job at 19 due to taking time off for surgery (not cool!) a daunting experience at the time.

Undeterred, I joined a recruitment company in an administrative role, eventually transitioning into recruitment, where my connection to the construction industry deepened. Leveraging these ties, I secured a position with a major construction company, propelling me into a world of opportunities. My unconventional journey emphasises the value of diverse experiences in shaping one’s career path.

I am a Construction Advisor in Civil Construction.

When I left school, I was like many others in my year and didn’t quite know what I wanted to do next. After many conversations with my parents, we thought I’d enjoy being a beauty therapist, so I went and completed a Diploma in Beauty Therapy. I worked in the industry for 2 years and did enjoy it, but it wasn’t a passion.

From there I travelled overseas twice and moved through a job in a Physiotherapy Clinic as a Practice Manager and then at the Commonwealth Games in Queensland as Fleet Coordinator.

All the roles I worked in I always gave 110% and was rewarded or progressed but I found myself still searching. Once I moved back from Queensland to Melbourne, I landed a job in Construction, working in an Administration role. I worked in Construction in mainly Administration roles such as Office Management and Executive Assistant, before moving into my current role as Construction Advisor alongside other engineers and have now completed a Diploma of Project Management.

Never in my dreams, did I think I would be working as an Engineer without studying at university, especially since I didn’t even know what engineering was in high school or that I would one day absolutely love it!

I am a Senior Mechanical Engineer with Aurecon for almost 3 years. I did not think this was where I would end up when I left school and decided to study Mechatronics Engineering.

The passion for building and creating something to help others has been with me since I was young and has taken me on an amazing journey from studying at Sydney University to working for a year before heading back to Sydney University for a PhD.

After my PhD, I worked at a design and construct company at all the various stages of design and construct projects. Since then, I have worked with numerous design consultancies as well as key suppliers of bulk materials handling equipment, enjoying learning and being challenged all the way.

During the final years of school I wanted to be a financial lawyer. But an honest conversation with my biology teacher about my strengths in math and science opened my eyes to engineering. I lo oked up engineering courses during the change in preference window and swapped to a double degree of Environmental Engineering and Science at Monash University.

After university I worked in sustainability, but after two years found I needed something different. I applied to 15 different companies who were looking for a “Graduate Environmental Engineer”. It was disheartening to receive 14 rejection letters, but I was eventually successful with VicRoads to deliver a road project in metro Melbourne and regional Victoria on behalf of the State Government. During this time, I was lucky to work with some great contractors who got me thinking, “Can I do what you do?”. And with their support, the answer became yes when I joined BMD!

A Project Engineer works as part of a site-based team to plan, coordinate and manage all the bits and pieces that make up a road. They will read and understand drawings, along with the long list of requirements (usually from the person paying for it) to make sure it is built to how they need. At the same time, they will need to build it safely, correctly and within budget. There will be many times when things won’t go to plan. That’s when a Project Engineer will need assess the problem, talk with experienced people, come up with a solution and then go to fix the problem to try and keep its impact to the rest of the project as small as possible.
