I am a First Nations mother, partner, sister, aunty, Police Officer and friend. I can rarely walk past an opportunity to make a difference and I would describe myself as someone who is passionate about creating positive change for our younger generations. An area I am particularly passionate about is creating subtle positive change within my organisation as I believe everything starts from within.

I have recently transferred to Police Headquarters from first response policing. I am now working in the Crime Preventions Programs Unit.

Acting Sergeant – Crime Prevention Programs Unit

A Senior Project Officer in the Crime Prevention Programs Unit, supports fellow police officers in all aspects of delivering programs including Neighbourhood Watch, LGBTI Liaison program and Volunteers in Policing program.

The unit also focuses on the development of policy, training packages, conferences, courses, district campaigns as well as coordination of whole of service reporting and crime prevention research.

Communication, time-management and problem-solving skills along with a passion for making a positive impact are important attributes to have whether you are an operational general duties police officer or involved in program support and development.

People don’t remember what you do for them but they will always remember how you made them feel. Even when attending the hardest jobs as police, we have the power to make members of the community feel heard – regardless of what capacity we are interacting with them.

A career with the Queensland Police Service has no ‘same day’ experience and is nothing short of exciting. Our day-to-day experience is greatly influenced by the changing needs of the communities that we serve. One thing that’s guaranteed is that while you may be challenged, you will be rewarded with the satisfaction that comes with protecting and serving your community.

All through high school I wanted to be a lawyer but then, when I graduated, I wasn’t so sure. Instead, one week after graduation, I started working full-time in a plumbing shop as a Customer Service/Admin Officer.

In school, I watched my Dad who had been involved in Auxiliary Firefighting and I thought that was pretty cool, so I joined Auxiliaries also. I then joined the SES as a volunteer and stayed in all those positions for up to 7 years.

An opportunity came up to work for Rural Fire Service (RFS) as an Administration Officer for a 3-month contract. I took a leap of faith and left my 7-year job for a 3-month opportunity that turned into 2 years of admin work for RFS.

Along this journey, I created great working relationships and was able to get a great female mentor. After a couple of failed attempts, I was successful in getting the First Nations Bushfire Safety Officer role for Rural Fire Service Far Northern.

First Nations Bushfire Safety Officer

A Bushfire Safety Officer supports the coordination and delivery of bushfire mitigation activities by brigades and partners to enhance bushfire preparedness including education and engagement activities.

A First Nations Bushfire Safety Officer also undertakes specialised strategic projects aimed at enhancing the department’s fire capacity to improve safety within Indigenous communities. The safety of communities is improved by the development of sustainable partnerships between community stakeholders and their partners.

My life didn’t follow the exact plan I had envisioned. I dreamt of being a princess, a marine biologist, an actor, even a 3D animator for Pixar. But unexpectedly, I found myself in the realm of fire, where incredible opportunities awaited me.

Growing up in a small community in South Africa, I had a hunger for excitement and adventure. My parents wanted the best for us, so we embarked on a journey to Australia in 2010, seeking new opportunities.

Little did I know, my path would lead me to join the Rural Fire Service as a volunteer. This unexpected turn opened doors to a world where I get to engage in thrilling experiences while safeguarding my community.

Today, I find myself fortunate to partake in incredible activities and play a vital role in protecting the people around me. It’s an unexpected journey that has allowed me to blend my passions and serve a greater purpose.

Investigator – State Flying Squad

The State Flying Squad (SFS) is an investigative unit of detectives in the Queensland Police. They form part of the Homicide Investigation Group and are based out of Queensland Police Headquarters in Brisbane City.

Their main role is to assist regions all over Queensland to investigate major and serious crimes or ongoing crime issues. This means there is a lot of travel within Queensland and a broad variety of jobs/investigations to work on – every shift is different. The investigations range from homicides to serious drug offences to Child Protection/Youth Justice and everything in between.

It’s a very rewarding role as they not only help victims, and the community, but also other police officers around the state.

Bushfire Safety officer

The Bushfire Safety Officer is responsible for implementing and coordinating bushfire safety measures in Southeast Queensland. This crucial role involves developing and executing strategies to minimize the risk of bushfire incidents and ensure community safety.

Working closely with government agencies, emergency services, and community organizations, they design and implement bushfire safety plans, adhering to national and state guidelines and regulations. Conducting comprehensive risk assessments, they identify potential hazards and vulnerabilities and develop effective mitigation strategies.

Additionally, the Safety Officer engages with communities, delivering educational programs and workshops to promote preparedness and proactive measures. During bushfire emergencies, they collaborate with emergency services in coordinating responses, providing intel and undertaking air observation to assist ground crews. Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of safety initiatives, ensuring compliance, and fostering partnerships are also key responsibilities.

I grew up in Northern Ireland not knowing what I wanted to do. When I finished school, I moved out of home to Glasgow University in Scotland and studied Psychology. After completing my Bachelor’s Degree, I realised it wasn’t the career I wanted.

In 2013, I packed my bags and booked a solo one-way ticket to Australia. I fell in love with the outdoor, laid-back lifestyle and worked with horses for several years to get my permanent residency visa.

After a few injuries, I knew it was time to change careers. I never saw myself as an “office job” person and after speaking with Queensland Police Service officers, I soon realised that was where I wanted to be. I got accepted into the academy in 2018 and have never looked back. I love the challenges of policing, the range of opportunities and having the support of my “blue family”.

My role as a police officer with the Queensland Police Service provides me the opportunity to serve and protect my community.

I decided to join the police ‘late in life’ after I had been thinking about doing it for ages. It just goes to show you are never too old to find out what you love doing and to pursue your dreams. I completed my police recruit course and started working as a general duties police officer, which is the type of police officer the community will see on a day-to-day basis.

I then progressed into a specialisation and am now a Senior Intelligence Officer. Intelligence is fun because I get paid to be a nosey nerd.

Scenes of Crime Officers assist investigations by collecting forensic evidence to enhance intelligence and add value to court cases.

Scenes of Crime Officers attend incident scenes, take up with involved parties, determine scene parameters and collect physical evidence. Evidence comes in a variety of forms. The methods available for evidence collection are equally diverse.

Scenes of Crime Officers must be proficient in each collection method to ensure evidence is preserved in a manner that can be presented in court.
