This role focuses on the ‘people’ side of change. It helps to ensure projects achieve their goals by preparing, equipping and supporting teams and individuals to adopt new ways of working.

It includes a LOT of internal communication, a lot of consultation, and often, a healthy dose of compromise. Change is inevitable, particularly in our fast-paced, technical environment, but it can also be really uncomfortable for people. This role is about understanding what makes people tick, and ensuring they have the information, resources and support they need to embrace something new.

I really didn’t know what I wanted to do when I left school, though I felt pulled to go to university. I decided to hedge my bets, and study a double degree in Business (Advertising) and Creative Industries (Media & Communication). There were elements of my degrees that I really enjoyed (consumer behaviour, strategic communication, creative writing) and elements that I really did NOT enjoy (accounting, economics, finance).

The job market was quite tough as I neared the end of my studies, and I started to stress about finding work. I thought I might be interested in event management, so I decided to cold call a number of companies, volunteering to support at events for free, just for the exposure. After volunteering at one company, I was offered a full-time job which I did while finishing my degree. I quickly discovered event management wasn’t for me, but I still didn’t know what was!

I knew there were lots of different pathways in the Queensland Government, so I applied for a LOT of entry level roles to get my foot in the door. I was eventually hired as a Customer Service Advisor, and my career in the public service began. I quickly progressed on to other roles in the ICT (Information and communications technology) space, including project support, governance and reporting, executive advisory and now, change management.

I didn’t know any of these roles even existed when I was at uni! I maintained an open mind, volunteered to take on new tasks and kept learning and up-skilling along the way. I love my job now, though I had no idea this is what I’d end up doing.

After leaving school with a vague ambition to work with people, I began a Bachelor of Arts but found it too broad. Transitioning to a more specialised Bachelor of Behavioural Science, I found my passion in organizational psychology and social science research. While at uni, I saw a casual “Research Assistant” role advertised in market research, knowing nothing about market research but knowing I had research skills, I applied, and got the job. After uni, despite aiming for organizational psychology roles, my research skills were in high demand in market research so stayed in this industry, working my way up to Account Director.

In my late-20s, I wanted to travel and work overseas, and landed a role in a Global Market research company in Brussels, Belgium. Managing information across Europe sparked my interest in Information Science, leading me to pursue a Graduate Diploma in this area. Learning concepts like “User Experience”, “Information Architecture”, and “Usability”, I returned to Australia eager to apply my newfound knowledge. Transitioning into the tech industry, I connected with a company specializing in this field, embarking on a journey to ensure websites and software solutions deliver optimal experiences for users. Since then, I’ve worked in a range of user experience research roles within agency, in-house and product companies.

From when I was very young, I wanted to be a veterinarian, but during school I started to really enjoy art and ended up being strong in the arts and sciences.

I took a year off after school to try and decide which path to take and then started a degree in life sciences. Several years later I had a masters degree in Zoology and few employment opportunities.

A lucky job placement in computational biology introduced me to the world of software development, in which I have worked ever since.

As systems or technologies evolve, they need upgrades or replacements – “out with the old, in with the new”.

Businesses invest a lot of money in these upgrades and need them to be successful. Usually, people have been using the old system for many years, and they are familiar with that system and do not want to change. This role facilitates taking each person on the change journey.

The three key goals of a Strategic Change Manager is to:
1. Make sure staff know why the business is implementing this new system
2. What they need to learn or do to be able to use it
3. Finally, support them when they are using the new system even if it is difficult at first, to keep going and work through the problems

Understanding technology and systems really helps in achieving these goals.

I grew up in Central Queensland and had no idea what I would do after school.  Never in a million years did I think I would end up working in a Government Information Technology (IT) department!

Our department offers some really innovative services for government, in areas of connectivity, security and computer processing just to name a few.

Being part of an industry that plays such a huge part in our everyday life lets me feel like I am part of the IT revolution going on all over the world. The skills I am gaining here are also very transferable, giving me endless growth opportunities if I feel like I want a change.

I hope I can give you an insight into this industry, which is not always purely technical.

This role designs and develops software that is used to form the “brain” of an uncrewed autonomous vehicle (UAV). The software lead is responsible for turning requirements given by our defence customer into a design that an engineer can use to build software.

While writing code is the main job of a software developer, in this particular role you spend the majority of your time problem solving. Programming how a UAV will operate requires you to think through the problems that they may encounter and work out predictable solutions to them.

Finally one of the most important parts of being a software lead is guiding and growing the software engineers within their team. You must look at all of the skill sets within your team and make sure they can work to the best of their abilities.

My team looks after the infrastructure in which our HR and Finance systems sit on. On an every day basis, I monitor and manage the Oracle databases and assist with administrative tasks (change management) for our organisation.

I have gone through a transition from a non-technical resource to being able to be a technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) and though it’s been a steep learning curve, it’s something that I enjoy!
