I completed high school in 2012 and continued to work for my gap year. I didn’t know what I wanted to do; I only knew that I did not want to go to university.

I saved all my money in my gap year which funded a working holiday to Canada for the following 12 months. When I returned, I enrolled into a CERT IV in Veterinary Nursing which is a two-year job-based certificate which I completed in 2018. In between completing this course, I worked at two different vet clinics and worked rurally on a 400,000-acre station.

I then wanted to study to get a trade and move into a resource industry. There just happened to be apprenticeships advertised in my local area (Dalby). I started a CERT III in engineering (Fitting) in 2019 and completed it in 2022. I moved into a fulltime tradesperson role in 2022 and haven’t looked back.

The role of a Maintenance Technician within an energy, gas and oil company is to carry out the maintenance on gas wellsites and gas compression stations. This includes small engine maintenance, pipework maintenance and part installation.

The Technician also inspects equipment, and systems to identify any issues. Repairing faulty equipment units and damaged structures is an ongoing task. Developing and implementing preventative maintenance procedures is also involved.
